Egni Co-op

We generate clean energy, enabling our sites to take action on climate change and to be more financially stable. In 2022, we saved our sites over £119k in electricity costs and over 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. Through our co-op share offer, we also give people the chance to invest their money towards a more sustainable future and get a fair rate of return. All surplus is channelled into our climate change Education programme.

Both Awel and Egni Co-ops have repaid interest to their members annually in line with their Share Offers.

We established Egni Co-operative in 2013 as a pilot scheme on 7 community buildings.

From 2019-21, we expanded Egni massively and developed a further 80 sites across Wales. We raised £5m in community shares and over £2m from the Development Bank of Wales.

We are continuing to develop new sites.  Here are our FAQs for prospective sites – we are prioritising larger roofs at the moment (the size of two tennis courts) and who use more than 100,000 kWh/year (an electricity bill of more than £35k). If you are interested to work with us, please contact Michael Switzer, our Development Director michael@awel.coop

Here are films of our installs on The Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales and on Merthyr Town Football Club.
