Energy Advisor – Awel Aman Tawe (AAT)

Location: Hwb y Gors, Cwmgors, SA18 1RF (with some home working)
Contract: Two years (with possible extension subject to funding)
Hours: 5 days per week (we are open to part-time applications for 4 days/week)
Salary: £30,500 pro rata

About the role

Awel Aman Tawe (AAT) is a leading community energy charity working to create a fair, affordable and low‑carbon future. Our Energy Team, based at Hwb y Gors, supports residents in Neath Port Talbot and the local area to stay warm, reduce their bills, understand their energy use, and access funding for improvements to their homes.

We are now recruiting a qualified and experienced Energy Advisor to join the team. We are seeking someone who can start delivering advice quickly and confidently, bringing existing training and skills to the work.

You will help tackle fuel poverty, support households living in cold or damp homes, and work with partners across the Upper Amman and Swansea Valleys.

About you

We are looking for a friendly, compassionate person who is motivated by helping people improve their circumstances. You will already have your National Energy Action City & Guilds Level 3 Energy Awareness qualification (or an equivalent recognised energy‑advice qualification), and experience delivering energy advice in homes or community settings.

You will be confident in:

• speaking with people in vulnerable or stressful situations
• giving practical and accurate advice
• carrying out home energy surveys
• identifying energy‑saving opportunities and basic building issues
• supporting clients with applications for grants or schemes
• documenting work and keeping accurate records

A passion for sustainability, tackling fuel poverty, and community‑based work is essential.

Responsibilities

As part of the AAT Energy Team, you will:

• Deliver telephone and face‑to‑face energy advice to residents.
• Undertake domestic energy surveys, including identifying insulation levels, heating systems, and damp/mould issues.
• Provide advice on tariffs, fuel debt, smart meters and household energy management.
• Install simple energy‑saving measures in vulnerable households (e.g., LED bulbs, radiator reflector panels, draught excluders).
• Help residents access heating and insulation schemes and refer to partner organisations when needed.
• Support events, workshops, and outreach activities at Hwb y Gors and in the community.
• Keep accurate records on AAT’s client database and support good data‑management practices.
• Work alongside AAT’s retrofit team, referring and collaborating where surveys indicate more complex works are needed.
• Be an ambassador for AAT’s values and help promote our work locally.

Person Specification

Required

• City & Guilds Level 3 Energy Awareness (or equivalent energy‑advice qualification).
• Experience delivering household energy advice.
• Strong communication and listening skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
• Empathy and patience when supporting vulnerable households.
• Good administration skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to travel independently across our semi‑rural area.
• Ability to climb a short ladder for loft‑hatch inspections (where safe and accessible).
• Willingness to undertake a DBS check.

Desirable

• Domestic Energy or Retrofit Assessor training/qualifications.
• Knowledge of Neath Port Talbot and surrounding areas.
• Welsh speaker or willingness to learn Welsh.
• Experience collaborating with community or support organisations.
